“Two Me”: Monument Lab Site 01

I chose to visit “Two Me” by Mel Chin at the City Hall location. This piece includes ramps that lead up to two identical pedestals labeled “ME.” The description for this monument online states: “Individually, each visitor attains monumental status when reaching the top. Together, across both platforms, visitors create a “We,” as in “We the People.” Chin’s artwork balances the longing for individualism with the foundational spirit of coexistence embedded within American culture.” Unfortunately, I visited this location early in the morning (and there was a sign that visitors are only allowed to start using the ramp after noon), so I wasn’t able to experience what if feels like to stand on the pedestal and become a part of the monument… but it was cool to see everyone walking by and interacting with it! I hope to come back again during its open hours.
